Dr. Kerry Healey

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Kerry Healey, President-elect of Babson College. Dr. Healey is the former Lt. Governor of Massachusetts and a leading advocate for the expansion of women’s rights and higher education in Afghanistan. She is an internationally known and respected leader with nearly three decades experience in academia, government, and international diplomatic and humanitarian work.

image
Joe Morrissey

At the luncheon, we will also honor the memory of Joe Morrissey ‘05 with the inaugural Leading the Way Award. In his application essay, Joe wrote, “My definition of leadership is a person or a group of people willing to take action. They take the initiative when no one else will. Leaders need to be courageous, risk takers, and stand up for what they believe in.” He lived his life as a true leader, by his own definition, and he will be missed.

Carrie Weatherbee Cunningham was on Joe’s project team working with the UMass Boston Urban Scholars Program. She writes, “Joe had that rare quality that after talking with him for 15 minutes you felt he understood you better than anyone you’d ever known and he became an instant friend.  His smile lit up the room and everything he did was driven by his caring for others- family, friends, and youth- those he worked with and those who would never know what he did on their behalf.”

For the many ways in which Joe embodied the Center’s vision of collaborative leadership, we will be presenting the first annual Leading the Way Award in honor of Joe’s memory.

Each year, the Fellows in the Emerging Leaders Program discover and practice collaborative leadership skills by working together in peer-led teams on projects that involve multiple stakeholders and have broad civic impacts. The projects for 2013 contribute to the economic and social well-being of the Boston area by harnessing the power of an engaged community. Our presenters are: David Christensen, AT&T; Beth Creavin, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare; Katie Hauser, Massachusetts Convention Center Authority; Patty Kaplinger, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts; Cristin Monaco Shields, Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary; and Geoff Phillips, NStar Electric & Gas.

There will also be a guest panel responding to the findings. They are (as of 5.8.13): Tito Jackson,  Boston City Councillor; Liveda Clements (invited), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts; Jackie Glenn (invited), EMC Corporation; and John Connors (invited), Boathouse Group and Small Can Be Big. Finally, we are pleased to announce Howard Leibowitz, Chief of Projects and Partnerships for the City of Boston will provide closing remarks.

Description:

Through their team projects, the Emerging Leaders used their professional skills, savvy about social media, and wide-reaching networks to bring resources to community efforts. They also furthered their own skills, for stepping into broader leadership positions in the Boston region and becoming stewards of its future economic health.  Come hear about this year’s team projects on June 7, to discover the lessons learned, the continuity of contributions across Emerging Leaders cohorts from the past and onward to the future, and the ways you can join others mobilizing to make a difference.
